Castle

Castle nuts allow for a cotter pin to be inserted through the slots on top side of nut and through a drilled portion of a shanked fasteners. This prevents the castle nut from rotating and loosening, therefore securing the assembly in place.

Castle nuts are similar to slotted nuts, but the slots are cut into the cylindrical portion that is equal in length to the slot depth and slightly smaller in diameter than the hex width.
