Standard blind rivets form an upset on the blind end of the rivet, expanding against rivet body and outside material until the mandrel shank breaks near its connecting juncture. This leaves the rivet fastening two materials together.
Closed end rivets have greater resistance to gas and liquids passing through the seal.
